Lever for Change Economic Opportunity Challenge
Per Scholas, 2020
This project showcases my execution work before launching The Content Jeannie. I didn't develop the narrative strategy for this grant. I was given a script and tasked with bringing it to life through animation (a former career passion). This demonstrates my creative problem-solving and execution skills in a mission-driven context, which I now bring to client work. By tackling complex challenges and delivering high-quality results under pressure, I can help clients effectively communicate their message and bring their vision to life, even in the face of unique constraints. While this is not an example of narrative ethnography, it shows how I can translate ideas into impactful creative assets tailored to organizational goals.
The Assignment
As the in-house Content Marketing Manager, I received a 30-second script for Per Scholas' $10M grant video submission. My task was to produce the video under significant constraints as COVID protocols eliminated in-person filming, and I had a 2-week deadline. My workflow included quickly reviewing the script with stakeholders, storyboarding the animation sequence to align with core messages, sourcing and adapting Per Scholas’ brand imagery, creating the 2D animations, and overseeing voice-over recording and sound design. I provided frequent progress updates to the team and managed feedback efficiently, ensuring on-time delivery despite the tight timeline.
The Creative Solution
I chose to create a 2D animated world using Per Scholas' branding imagery. This method enabled me to work remotely (COVID-safe), visualize abstract concepts like pathways, barriers, and transformation, and reuse existing brand assets creatively and efficiently beyond their initial purpose. Throughout the creative process, I maintained close communication with stakeholders by sharing storyboards and animation drafts for their review. I organized regular check-ins to gather feedback, addressed feedback promptly, and adapted the animation to reflect the organization's goals and vision. This collaborative approach helped keep everyone aligned and resulted in an animation that was true to Per Scholas' professional, accessible, and hopeful image. I also handled the voice-over work.
The Result
Per Scholas received $10 million in November 2020. The video effectively conveyed the script and stood out among submissions.
What This Project Taught Me
I am extremely proud of this work. I overcame a creative challenge with tight restrictions, resulting in a $10M success for an organization I genuinely believe in.
