Know the conditions to fulfill your mission and how to create sustainable impact
The Fire Framework explains the conditions mission-driven organizations need to fulfill and sustain their impact. Inspired by the Fire Triangle Model, the Fire Framework interprets the three elements needed to start a fire as conditions for fulfilling the mission: location, process, and time.
Your Mission is your Fire!
The fire triangle states that three elements are needed to start most fires: oxygen, fuel, and heat. When these three elements come into contact, a fire ignites. With enough of each, a fire can sustain itself and transfer energy to its surroundings.
Mission Fulfillment Begins with Context
Missions are like fires. When you clearly communicate what your mission is, where it is, and how it changes over time, those who come into contact with you can truly feel your impact, whether as a donor or a participant.
This is called contextualizing your mission.
If your mission operates without any of these conditions, you will operate unsustainably and eventually burn out (or burn up!) your organization.

Breaking down The Fire Framework

Oxygen is the element that breathes life into the fire. It is the most abundant element and must be present at all times for a fire to burn.
Your impact is felt where your community lives. Your community must exist somewhere for your mission to breathe life into it.

Heat is the transfer of energy between a body and its surroundings.
Your mission is to transfer the resources you provide to your community, whether that’s through programming, services, or resources items like food or diapers.

Fuel is any material that reacts with other substances to release energy.
Over time, your impact can empower others and ignite sustainable change.
Why Context Matters
Missions are like fires; they ignite in one place until they come into contact with something else that can react or respond. Your mission starts where your community lives. That is where you are needed most. Like air, your mission breathes life into your communities through your services. As a result, your mission generates new life for those you impact. Over time, your mission reveals how you create sustainable impact and empower your community.
Context also protects your impact. For example, if you operate at multiple locations but cannot scale your resources, processes, or availability effectively, you will burn out, and your mission will fail. Context brings clarity; clarity reveals what’s true about your impact.
